Bakery

Regis M.

Regis, 32, completed his bachelor's degree in agriculture in Rwanda and grew up in a rural area surrounded by sweet potato fields. In his family, sweet potatoes were part of the daily meal. When Regis went to university, he learned that the orange-colored potato is nutritious, healthy and rich in vitamin A. He wondered if this rich food could be prepared in a way that would appeal to both rural and urban populations.

Project description

Before he graduated, he approached three colleagues on campus and presented them with the idea of turning sweet potato flour into nutritious products. Regis and his friends then tried to make sweet potato spaghetti. Unfortunately, despite numerous tests, they were unable to bring the product to market. They then tried producing sweet potato donuts and sweet potato bread. They were finally able to launch these products on the market. However, due to their limited knowledge of the food industry, they faced many challenges in developing standardized recipes. Regis therefore continued his education and completed a course in food science. Immediately after graduating, he sought out an experienced baker and sat down with him for 10 days to develop a recipe for the sweet potato breads. In the meantime, his friends had left the business.

Today, Regis focuses on sweet potato bread and is in the prototype phase of another product: sweet potato cookies. Currently, his customers are mainly grocery stores, middle class households and offices in Kigali. Regis has a vision to build the best bakery business for nutritious products at affordable prices in Rwanda. Regis is well educated, experienced, energetic and very committed. He is passionate about what he does and we believe that with BPN's support he can build a sustainable business and create jobs.
