Battery recycling

Leandre B.

Leandre graduated with a master's degree in electrical engineering and is co-founder of a company that develops innovations in the field of battery reuse in Rwanda. In Rwanda, batteries supplied with various devices are thrown away when they show signs of low capacity. In addition, maintaining the power supply in the event of a blackout requires the use of diesel generators and lead-acid batteries, which increases carbon dioxide emissions and endangers the environment. After Leandre and his two co-founders realized that batteries are treated as waste when their performance diminishes and that they are poisoning our soil and water with chemicals, they decided to start a company that provides environmentally friendly energy storage services.

Project description

Leandre's company aims to become the leading energy storage service provider in the Rwandan telecommunications industry and the leading battery reuse company by developing innovations in battery recyclability and ownership models. He believes they can offer telecommunications tower operators annual cost savings of 43% by using their energy storage model as a service instead of purchasing and operating a diesel generator. This innovation will help avoid 65% of the corresponding carbon dioxide emissions per tower and save 2,310 tons of carbon dioxide in 5 years, which is equivalent to planting 105,000 trees.

Leandre and his co-founders want to create jobs for software, electrical and electronics engineers in Rwanda. He expects BPN to support him in the strategic planning of his company so that he can run it at a professional level. Leandre will need to combine his technical skills with business knowledge to successfully grow the company.
