Private school

Janvier K.

Janviers was a lecturer at the Independent University of Kigali for more than 10 years. During this time, he got to know the deficits of the Rwandan education system. He was particularly influenced by an encounter with a child in the 5th grade of elementary school who could not express himself in English, not even when saying hello. In order to remedy the current deficits of the Rwandan education system, or rather the high drop-out rate due to the quality of education as well as the resources of parents and the recruitment and management of teachers, Janvier decided to open an elementary school himself. As he lacked the start-up capital, he even sold his own house to build the school.

Project description

Janiver started his business in 2016 with a class of 5 children; today, 380 pupils already attend his private school. His school is to become a learning center where children learn to read, write and express themselves competently in Kinyarwanda, French and English from the lower primary level. Following the change in the language of instruction from Kinyarwanda to French and from Kinyarwanda to English throughout Rwanda last year, less than 50% of primary school teachers are still fluent in English and French. Even fewer pupils are proficient in these languages, which has currently increased the drop-out rate. In contrast to public schools and most other private schools, which neglect French and English at primary level, Janvier focuses on the mastery of both languages.

His target group are middle-class families with children aged 3 to 12 in his neighborhood. Due to the high demand for teaching places in his school, Janvier plans to expand his school and build 5 new classrooms and hire 10 more teachers so that the school can accommodate up to 1,000 students from 1st to 6th grade of elementary school. Janvier is aware that he needs management skills to run his growing school professionally.
