Horticulture: fruit and vegetables

Alice M.

Alice is 48 years old, divorced and the mother of two teenagers. She worked for several years as an office assistant at commercial banks and NGOs. She has always wanted to work independently as an entrepreneur. To realize her dreams, she completed entrepreneurship courses at Regent University in 2012. This prepared her for setting up her own company. The next step was to sell her large home and invest the money in a horticultural business.

Project description

She leased 2.5 hectares of fertile land near Lac Muhazi in eastern Rwanda. She opted for horticulture as the demand for fruit and vegetables in Rwanda continues to rise. This is due in particular to the increasing number of hotels and restaurants. As a result, there is also a higher consumption of locally produced fruit juices and jams. Since then, her company has been producing and selling fruit and vegetables such as passion fruit, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, pineapples and watermelons.
Recently, her production increased to such an extent that she decided to export her produce. This requires compliance with international standards and additional investment. So Alice is now looking at building greenhouses, installing a modern irrigation system and buying cold storage to maintain freshness after harvest.
In order to manage this growth effectively, she turned to BPN. She is seeking support through training and coaching to improve her business skills.
